There are almost no children’s books on the market today that bring faith and science together in positive and scientifically accurate ways, but the children’s book, Eek! Said Amy, has done exactly that and addressed a serious mental health issue facing our children today.

In Eek! Said Amy author L.J. Zimmerman has brought together our understanding of the brain science of fear and how several Christian spiritual practices can help us calm our fear. We meet a little boy named Devon and his amygdala friend, Amy. Amy lives in Devon’s brain and helps him feel emotions like fear. But, Amy can get out of control sometimes. That’s when Devon needs to rely on faith and spiritual practices to calm Amy down. Amy’s character is brought to life by Charles Long’s amusing illustrations. This story is as delightful as it is practical and empowering.

Given the rise in both anxiety and depression seen among children and youth, this book is a timely ‘must read.’ Though it is written for children ages 3-7, my 10-year-old read and enjoyed it. Even my 15-year-old, who saw it sitting on the table and was intrigued by the cover, gave it a quick read and a ‘thumbs up’ review. I can see a tween or young teen benefitting from the book by reading it to a younger sibling or cousin.

Eek! Said Amy. ‘You need to get this book!’ says Discovery & Faith.
